Be ready to leave at 2:15 tomorrow.
It had been under her door when her alarm clock woke her at midday. The note was unsigned but Markâs writing was easy to recognise. Sheâd been relieved.
âYouâre fascinated by him,â Iquis says. âI used to watch you fighting with him last term, and you were so intent you didnât even realise I was looking.â
âOnly because I hated him.â
âYou always knew where he was in the room.â
âSo?â Harriet shifts uncomfortably.
âAnd the way you fought with him when he pulled you from the river; so much passion. There was nothing else except him.â
The crushing rosemary. His hand around her ankle, spinning her round.
âIs that why you wanted me to keep away from him?â Iquis says. âSo that you could have him?â
âNo. Itâs not like that. You think I fancy him or something â I donât.â Harrietâs words spill out, as Iquisâs jibes cause her to feel things, to make connections. Itâs like being given the key to a complicated puzzle. âItâs justâ¦â Sheâs scared, she knows sheâs going to say something that she doesnât want to admit, the dream is flooding her mind, spinning her around, faster and faster, âthatâ¦â and then, thudding to a halt. âHe reminds me of Stephen.â
She feels strangely empty. How long have I known? How long have I been denying it for?
âItâs stupid,â she says. âI worshipped Stephen. I hate Mark. And yet thereâs somethingâ¦â she frowns. âThereâs the obvious things. Theyâre both blonde and theyâre both competitive, sport mad.â
She flashes through images of each of them flushed and sweaty, filled with excitement and triumph, surrounded by friends, confident in their right to lead, to win.
âBut thatâs it. Nothing else.â
Iquis is silent.
âIt doesnât make sense,â Harriet says. âI donât understand why a smug git like him can remind me of Stephen. Itâs wrong. Heâs not fit. Itâs like insulting Stephenâs memory.â
Yet Iâm looking forward to seeing Mark tomorrow, to sparring with him, to trying to get the better of him. Iâve missed it. Things have been a bit flat without the competition between us.
I better not let Iquis realise.
âMaybe you didnât always like Stephen,â Iquis says.
âDonât be stupid!â
Iquis traces a geometric pattern in the mud with a stick which has mysteriously appeared in her hands while Harriet was wrestling with her thoughts. Itâs disconcerting, in the same way that a jump in a film would be.
âPerhaps Iâm scared,â Iquis says.
âWhat!â
âThat if you go, you wonât return.â
Harriet is jolted away from her thoughts of Mark/Stephen. Iquis couldnât possibly know about her fantasy of being adopted by Dark Island at the concert, could she?
âThatâs daft,â she says. âOf course Iâll return. I came back after Christmas, didnât I?â
Iquisâs stick slows against the mud, continues to trace, but very slowly, very gradually.
âLook⦠thereâs somethingâ¦â Unusually hesitant.
âWhat?â Harriet says, leaning forwards.
Iquis scribbles out the patterns with a swift movement.
âShare blood with me.â She whispers the words. Harriet can only just catch them.
âWhat do you mean?â
Iquisâs expression is intent, unnerving. She doesnât answer. Just waits, the stick stilled in her hand.
